12 Years a Slave, directed by Steve McQueen and released in 2013, is based on Solomon Northup's 1853 memoir of the same events. Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery before the Civil War. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Northup across his twelve years in bondage on Louisiana plantations, a period the film follows until a chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist alters his path. It won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
